Introduction to Business Analysis Using Spreadsheets: Basics
The course 'Introduction to Business Analysis Using Spreadsheets: Basics' introduced fundamental spreadsheet skills such as using SUM, COUNTIF, and IF functions, as well as organizing data and
visualizing it through charts. The course is a 2-hour guided project course
taught by Omnya Khaled, and it includes step-by-step video tutorials that enable
me to learn by doing, and it concluded with a quiz to assess my understanding
of the course.
The
course helped me understand the basics of spreadsheet software using Google
Sheets and how to apply functions to perform mathematical operations, clean and
manipulate data, and create visual presentations. I learned how to apply
logical functions like IF, AND, OR, and aggregation functions like SUMIF and
COUNTIF. I also learned how to clean data by deleting duplicates and splitting
columns and most of activities were new to me, though simple but an essential skill and something to make my work easier while working with Excel. These skills built a strong base for using spreadsheets in a
real-world context.
I realized that by mastering these basics of Excel, students can transition from manual ledger entries to digital record-keeping, enhancing accuracy and efficiency. The course also bridges classroom theory with modern accounting tools. By introducing these basics, students and teachers are better equipped to work in a digitally enabled learning environment. For example, using COUNTIF to filter and count data entries is similar to tallying specific transactions in school account books.
